Daniel Chester French (1850-1931) was best known for his over life size sculpture of a seated Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial. There is a lot more to French as seen at the Boston Athenaeum. Included in the show is an array of models and studies from Chesterwood, in Stockbridge. The maquettes (a sculptors sketch) range in size from 5 to 50 inches. I was particularly taken by “Spirit of the Waters”. Here is my version of a sketch of a sketch.
